Ninoy Aquino Stadium, Manila- February 14, 2025
The Wushu Federation Philippines (WFP) successfully conducted the 2025 National Wushu Coaching Seminar from February 10 to 14 at the Ninoy Aquino Stadium, Rizal Memorial Sports Complex. The event brought together 52 dedicated participants—40 specializing in Sanda and 12 in Taolu—to enhance their coaching skills and further the development of wushu in the country.
This seminar was made possible through a collaboration with the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC), under the leadership of OIC Commissioner Walter Francis Torres, whose support has been instrumental in strengthening grassroots and elite-level wushu programs.
The opening program was officially led by WFP Secretary General Mr. Julian Camacho, setting the tone for an intensive and insightful training experience. The event was further graced by the presence of WFP President Mr. Godofredo Jalasco Jr. and PSC Commissioner Bong Coo, underscoring the significance of the seminar in advancing wushu as a competitive and developmental sport in the Philippines.
The comprehensive training program was spearheaded by WFP’s Training and Development Head, Mr. Samson Co, with the invaluable assistance of national team coaches and athletes.
Their collective expertise provided participants with in-depth knowledge, technical drills, and practical coaching methodologies tailored for both Sanda and Taolu disciplines.
An essential part of the seminar was the Anti-Doping Awareness Talk, conducted by Philippine National Anti-Doping Organization (PHINADO) President Dr. Alejandro Pineda Jr., alongside Testing Operations Head Nathan Vasquez. Their session emphasized the importance of maintaining clean and fair competition in sports, educating coaches on anti-doping policies, prohibited substances, and proper testing procedures to ensure compliance with international standards.
Pocari Sweat, a product sponsor, also played a key role in the seminar by setting up a booth to support participants throughout the event. Their Event Specialist, Ms. Johaima Domato, coordinated the engagement, while Dr. Maria Fatima Gualberto delivered an informative talk on the importance of proper hydration, especially in high-intensity sports like wushu.
In his closing speech, WFP Secretary General Mr. Julian Camacho shared the federation’s vision for the future, emphasizing the need to expand wushu coaching education beyond Metro Manila. To address logistical challenges faced by coaches in far-flung areas, WFP is planning to conduct regional coaching seminars, making wushu more accessible to provinces with strong grassroots potential. This initiative aims to bring quality training closer to more aspiring coaches, further strengthening the sport's reach across the country.
The success of the 2025 National Wushu Coaching Seminar reflects WFP’s continuous commitment to developing skilled and knowledgeable coaches, ensuring the growth and competitiveness of wushu in the Philippines. With the support of key partners such as the PSC, PHINADO, and corporate sponsors, the federation remains steadfast in its mission to elevate the sport to greater heights.
